In the late 1980s and almost all of the 1990s, Seinfeld ruled the airwaves. What made Seinfeld unique was that a) it was famously a show about nothing, and b) it had storylines that were so preposterous and funny that almost everyone that watched an episode could relate to the characters and the situation, no matter how “out there” it was. I remember reading an article about Internet usage around 1995 that documented the “Seinfeld effect”—a time of day where Internet usage plummeted regularly once/week, and was attributed to people getting off their computers to watch. And then poof!, the Seinfeld phenomenon was gone. Don’t get me wrong: the episodes are still in syndication, and aired on a regular basis (although I don’t think I’ve watched a full episode since the show’s finale in 1998). But the show doesn’t have the same draw for me anymore.
Having said that, I was delighted to read in my co-worker Mike Hanson’s blog a comparison between the state of California and George Costanza, one of the key characters from the Seinfeld series. I immediately connected with his message: California was a state with so much promise, which really has messed up somewhere along the way. And I loved the (albeit tongue-in-cheek) message that perhaps lawmakers should do what George does in one very memorable episode: do the opposite. Just do the opposite of what he would normally do. George does this as an experiment and imagine his surprise when his life takes off: dates, jobs with the NY Yankees, and all sorts of good events.
While analyst Hanson’s dismay with the choices California is making with its perceived ‘business-hostile” taxation of internet companies like Amazon.com is evident, he delivers the message in a humorous, engaging way that this ex-California Girl not just understands, but can relate to thanks to the genius of Seinfeld. Bravo, Mike, bravo. For the full article check out the Fisher Investments Investing IQ blog.
